This unique oil painting was exhibited in Raymond Lau's solo exhibition held in conjunction with the United Overseas Bank 13th painting of the year competition held at Empress Place museum, Singapore, from September 28 to October 2, 1994.

Raymond Lau is a local outstanding artist. A diploma-holder of La Salle college of the Arts, Lau asserted his presence in the local art scene by winning a string of arts awards that culminated in the prestigious Painting of the Year Award organised by the UOB Group in 1993.

His paintings are vitalised by its contents, by the interplay of light, and by the painter's personal vision of the topic at hand. Picking a subject for a painting is a mere start. Lau's reaction to the topic demands a tremendous decision as he translates his sense or feeling of the suject matter into a visual mode for the viewer.

This painting in particular, features an old building in Chinatown. Lau loves to haunt Singapore's old nooks and corners to soak himself in the enchanting old world that such wornout haunts exude. Chinatown, with all its culture, colour and ambience, cluttored, suffocated with folks and buildings and objects, is certainly a hot favourite for him.
